I&#8217;ve had countless crushes over the years &#8211; on the guy working the checkout at my local Coles, on the man I regularly make awkward eye contact with at the same cafe every morning, and most recently, on a coworker who barely says a word to me.</p><p>The details change, but the pattern remains the same. It&#8217;s less about them and more about projection &#8211; someone I see regularly but don&#8217;t actually know, a kind of <em>&#8220;sweet, sweet fantasy&#8221;</em> built through repetition rather than connection.</p><p>I&#8217;m distracted, not by romance but by proximity and the effect it has on how I behave around my crushes. I&#8217;ve never felt particularly self-conscious in my day-to-day life, but around them I become acutely aware of myself. Every interaction is dissected in hindsight, no matter how insignificant.</p><p>Turns out the quickest way to make me forget how to act is to repeatedly cross paths with someone I find attractive while trying to appear completely unfazed. Which is to say, I am, in fact, deeply fazed.</p><p>Most crushes exist in the space between familiarity and knowing. You see someone often enough for curiosity to develop, but not enough for that curiosity to be resolved. That combination of scarcity and proximity is what makes it feel more significant than it probably is.</p><p>I read into small interactions &#8211; a glance, a brief exchange, a shared routine. None of it is personal, but all of it becomes easier to revisit than it should be. It creates a pattern, brief moments, followed by overthinking, followed by an attempt to convince myself I&#8217;m done thinking about it altogether.</p><p>What I enjoy most, though, is what a crush does to the rest of my life. I put more effort into getting ready in the morning. I walk a little faster. I become more attentive to the possibility of something mildly romantic happening. Mariah Carey&#8217;s <em>&#8220;Fantasy&#8221; </em>sounds better through my headphones. A trip to my local coffee shop feels marginally more exciting. Ordinary routines begin to acquire a sense of anticipation.</p><iframe class="spotify-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;image&quot;:&quot;https://i.scdn.co/image/ab67616d0000b273749e9bfa78277f30ad2c9a9c&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;Fantasy&quot;,&quot;subtitle&quot;:&quot;Mariah Carey&quot;,&quot;description&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://open.spotify.com/track/6xkryXuiZU360Lngd4sx13&quot;,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;noScroll&quot;:false}" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/6xkryXuiZU360Lngd4sx13" frameborder="0" gesture="media" allowfullscreen="true" allow="encrypted-media" loading="lazy" data-component-name="Spotify2ToDOM"></iframe><p>Nothing ever comes of it, of course. The man from the caf&#233; keeps ordering his flat white. The coworker asks me about work, and only work. The Coles checkout guy is almost certainly just being friendly. The story exists entirely in my head. They keep living their lives, blissfully unaware they&#8217;ve been cast in mine.</p><p>And yet, for a while, it makes everyday life feel slightly more interesting. Perhaps that&#8217;s the point. I always end up in the same place &#8211; noticing, interpreting, and then immediately attempting to un-interpret everything I&#8217;ve just made up.</p><h4>Is It a Crush or a Crash?</h4><p>There are moments when impulse takes over. I want to interrupt the illusion. I want to know if it&#8217;s mutual &#8211; if they notice me in the same fragmented way I notice them, if my presence registers at all in the spaces we share.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!_omS!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!_omS!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!_omS!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!_omS!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!_omS!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!_omS!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg" width="750" height="741" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:741,&quot;width&quot;:750,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:117129,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://shabnamsidhu.substack.com/i/201718158?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!_omS!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!_omS!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!_omS!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!_omS!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9b1c121d-5b57-4956-bc4b-8990b0c20dec_750x741.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Then the logic kicks back in, and the thought passes just as quickly as it arrives.
